Common Conditions Treated with Hip Arthroscopy

Hip arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure and this has transformed how many hip conditions are treated. This procedure allows surgeons to ignore and treat issues inside the hip joint while minimising disruption to the surrounding tissues. Patients are able to have reduced pain and shorter recovery times with this procedure.

FAI or femoroacetabular impingement is a condition

Where there is abnormal bone growth around the hip joint. This will cause the bones to rub against each other and this can damage the labrum and the articular cartilage which can lead to pain and reduced range of movement. There are two types of this. The cam impingement is where extra bone will form around the femoral head and it will become less round as a result. In pincer impingement, there will be extra bone extending over the normal rim of the acetabulum. This will lead to pinching during motion. During Matt Barnes hip arthroscopy, the abnormal bone structures will be reshaped by the surgeon so that further damage can be prevented. The labrum can also be repaired if needed. The labrum is a ring of cartilage that is around the hip joint and this provides cushioning and stability.

Some of the causes of labral tears are acute injury,

Structural abnormalities and repetitive motion. If you have this, some of the symptoms you will experience are locking or clicking of the hip and your range of movement will also be limited. With arthroscopic surgery, the torn labrum can be repaired or debrided. If there is an extensive tear, labral reconstruction will be carried out. Loose bodies are bone fragments or cartilage that breaks off and these will float within the joint space. This can occur as a result of osteoarthritis, trauma or other degenerative conditions. When there are loose bodies, it can lead to swelling, pain, locking and restricted motion. These loose fragments can be removed by hip arthroscopy which can help alleviate these symptoms. This will help prevent further damage to the joint.

Septic arthritis is known as an infection

In the hip joint and this can lead to swelling, redness, fever and severe pain. An infection can occur as a result of injury, surgery or bacteria spreading from other parts of the body. You need to receive prompt treatment so that joint destruction can be prevented. With arthroscopic lavage and debridement, the joint will be flushed with sterile fluid so that the infected tissue can be removed. This is a less invasive approach compared to open surgery and it is an effective treatment for infection all the while preserving the integrity of the joint. The inflammation of the synovial membrane is called synovitis. This is a condition that can occur as a result of infection, injury or underlying diseases. The symptoms of this include swelling, stiffness and joint pain. With hip arthroscopy, the inflamed synovial tissue can be removed so that pain and inflammation can be reduced. This is a great way to provide significant relief along with improving joint function.
